PEFC is a European forest certification programme created in 1999 at the initiative of private forest owners and operators. PEFC certification means that the wood used comes from sustainably managed forests, in line with the Helsinki criteria. These criteria define forest management that is economically viable, environmentally appropriate and socially beneficial. PEFC certification also requires procedures to ensure traceability of certified paper throughout the printing production process.
PEFC certification helps ensure that printed products use paper meeting specific requirements. These cover environmental aspects (forest resources, ecosystems and biodiversity) as well as socio-economic aspects, and broadly reflect the principles of sustainable forest management.
